The beauty landscape in India has changed dramatically over the last couple of years and so has the beauty consumer. From your basic CTM routine of yore, Indian women are now experimenting with a vast range of beauty products. Active based ingredients, multi tasking products and K-beauty routines (think chok chok skin!) are all a part of the Indian woman’s skincare. Another hot trend in this scenario is the advent of clean beauty brands.
With a plethora of terms like organic, natural, vegan flooding the beauty buzz, we figured that there’s a lot of confusion around the term ‘clean beauty’. So what is clean beauty exactly? For starters, just because a brand is natural, organic or green doesn’t mean that it is a clean beauty brand. The Good Face Project defines clean beauty as a product that is safe, has transparent labeling of ingredients and is non toxic. A clean beauty brand doesn’t have to be all natural or 100% chemical free. Instead it needs to eliminate as many toxins as possible and be completely honest about its ingredients.
What this also means is that the onus is on the consumer to be more aware of what goes into beauty products. This means being aware of common toxins, reading labels and not getting misled by terms like ‘vegan’, ‘organic’, or ‘100% natural’. We’ve tried to make life a little easier for you by identifying some clean beauty brands in India. Here are 5 we love:

They also have GMP certification by the Department of Ayurveda. We’ve tried a bunch of products from this brand and love their ‘luxurious Ayurveda’ philosophy. Based on the principles of classical Ayurveda, Krya has products for skin, hair, children & teens and home care. Krya is a 100% natural brand with full ingredient transparency on their product labels. We love the brand’s philosophy and approach towards sustainable, transformative living. Aside from their fun name and pretty cool website art, Hibiscus Monkey has an interesting back story. Founded by an all-woman mom-daughter team, Hibiscus Monkey focuses on body care. Their products are skin-friendly and 100% natural. They use nature derived ingredients and give full ingredient transparency on their product labels. Their products have waterless formulations are are suited for sensitive skin as well. They currently have product offerings in scalp care, body care and period care.
